Plastic flamingo extinction, vending machine attacks and other useless information

Greetings fellow Kamazooies:

For this weekend, I thought I would circulate some fun facts that you can review for your own personal interest or share with your friends during some weekend socializing.

  • Cleopatra lived closer to the invention of the iPhone than she did to the building of the Great Pyramid.
  • Vending machines are twice as likely to kill you than a shark is. Insurance studies in the U.S. report that the odds of dying from a shark attack are 1 in 250 million while the odds of dying from a vending machine (attack ;-) are 1 in 112 million.
  • Home Alone was released closer to the moon landing than it was to today.
  • Actress Betty White, born in 1922, is actually older than sliced bread. The first prototype of a full-loaf bread slicing machine was actually developed in 1911, but that unit was destroyed in a fire. It wasn't until 1928 that an full production unit was ready and the first commercially sliced bread was produced by Chillicothe Baking Company of Chillicothe, Missouri, on July 7, 1928.
  • There are more fake flamingos in the world than real flamingos. Also, plastic pink flamingos were closer to extinction than real ones. They almost went extinct when their producer, Union Products, went out of business on November 1, 2006. Fortunately (or unfortunately depending on your view) their design and rights were purchased by Faster Form Corporation and "reproduction" continues until this day.
  • Pluto never made a full around the sun from the time it was discovered to when it was declassified as a planet. It was discovered in 1930 and it takes around 248 earth years to circle the sun.
  • Russia has a larger surface area than Pluto.
  • The CEO of Food For The Poor is named Robin Mahfood.
  • You can't hum while holding your nose. Go ahead, I know you're going to check this one out personally ;-)
  • If you could find a piece of paper large enough to be folded in half 42 times, its  eventual thickness would be large enough reach to the moon (we know you may want to verify this one so click here to validate the math).
  • There are more atoms in a glass of water than glasses of water in all the oceans on Earth.

With this somewhat interesting but largely irrelevant information, I bid you and yours a happy Spring weekend, at least if your in the northern hemisphere.
