You may have heard about the interview Mike Tyson did with Nathan Downer on CP24, a news station in Canada. The interview was intended to preview Tyson's one man show at the ACC named "The Undisputed Truth" which covers his journey through boxing, acting and other key elements of his life.
In an earlier interview Tyson said that the upcoming show covers how he got through tough times and it may make people feel better about themselves. However, in the CP24 interview, Downer asked about a meeting and PR stunt that Tyson did Tuesday with Toronto mayor Rob Ford. He questioned whether an endorsement from a man who is a convicted rapist will be good for Ford's mayoral campaign.
Mike Tyson clearly didn't appreciate the comment and he said it was a "shit" comment and further berated Nathan Downer. Downer and Tyson's PR side-kick quickly tried to change the topic back to the upcoming show that evening but Tyson brought the conversation back to the rape comment and said "Its so interesting that you come across as a nice guy but you're really a piece of shit". As Downer wound down the interview, Tyson once more berated him with a final "f-bomb".
Yesterday after the interview, Downer Tweeted "No ill will toward Mike Tyson. He lashed out at me and that's okay. Not taking it personally"
What are your thoughts on this? Did Downer go too far with the reference to Tyson's 1991 rape conviction? Do Tyson's reaction was justified?
I wonder what the reaction was at Tyson's show later on Wednesday night. If anyone of our members was there, it would be great to get some insight.
I think both had the right. Journalists have the right to ask the tough questions and interviewees should have the right to answer them (or not) in any way they see fit. The question is did Tyson respond in an appropriate manner...if his objective was to promote his show, I think he hit a homerun.
Good point Lorne. I thought it was a negative for the show from a certain view but from an awareness view, this definitely got the news out that "there is a show at the ACC tonight"
