November is Aboriginal Education Month. Although this year's theme is 'Aboriginal Presence in the War of 1812', I'd like to take this opportunity to recommend a couple of fiction books written by aboriginal author - Joseph Boyden.
He was the 2008 Giller Prize recipient for 'Through Black Spruce' (novel of contemporary aboriginal life, full of the dangers and harsh beauty of both forest and city). He won many awards for his first novel 'Three Day Road' (an unforgettable portrait of two Native snipers in World War One).
I'm anxiously awaiting my order for his third book 'Extraordinary Canadians Louis Riel & Gabriel Dumont'. I thoroughly enjoyed his first two novels. Please see http://www.josephboyden.com/books.htm to learn more.
Love this author. I've read "Three Day Road" and own "Through Black Spruce", but still have to read it. Glad to hear he's writing a third!
Another great book written by an Aboriginal scholar is "Drawing Out Law: A Spirit's Guide" by John Borrows. It provides a unique way to learn about history, tradition, and law through traditional stories. Slightly academic, yes - but a very enjoyable read!
Once you pick up Through Black Spruce, it's hard to put down. Thanks for the recommendation on John Borrows - I'll look for it on my next Chapters trip. My order for the 3rd Boyden book came in today - can't wait to dive in!
