Flourish - 3 Positives exercise working out

As I drive to work, I started listening to Flourish by Martin Seligman. He is the psychologist who started the whole positive psychology movement. One of his first suggestions is a little exercise I am working on ... and it seems to have some good results - of helping me stay more positive.

This exercise is to get a small journal, and each day - write down three positive things that you did or that happened today. It could be as simple as "it was a sunny and warm day" or "Bob in Sales thanked me for my help with this client, today" or "I took a walk around the neighbourhood with my son". Then write down WHY. For example, "Bob thanked me because I did a great job of explaining the software to the client, which helped him win the deal".

I am in day three, and Seligman recommends doing this for 6 days, at least. He also insists that you have to write it down.... so not good enough just to think about it. The writing process somehow makes it feel better, and more concrete.

So far, it seems to be putting me in a better mood - which is much needed in my job (or any job).

Give it a try. After all - it is such a wonderful thing to be in a good mood - and to savour it and enjoy life as much as possible!

Hi Charles:  I've heard of Seligman but never studied him. Have looked around at some of his stuff, and he definitely has a lot to offer about changing our attitudes towards a happier and more meaningful life.  Great post, thanks!

Journaling certainly seems to be a trend these days.  There must be something to it.  Thanks for sharing!
