Wondering if anyone else tried the 3 Positives & Why approach, discussed in my last blog posting?
I tried it - for 12 consecutive days. It was actually nice. I found it to be a refreshing way to take a 5-10 minute break during my day. Taking a breather to reflect on what was going well in the day, and why (trying to internalize what I was doing that was making it positive). The best part of the practice was that by writing it down (I kept a small notebook), it forced me to really think about what were the good things happening - even on a tough day (we all have them).
The effect on me was to lighten my mood. I found that I was a little lighter hearted at work, felt less weighed-down by issues - and just felt more positive about things. It definitely had the right impact on me, and on my work. ffect this had
After a few days, I will give it a break. Having read from other positive psychologists, it turns out that people get used to doing this exercise, and it just becomes a routine if they do it all the time. In other words, after a while it will stop having a positive effect on your mood, outlook and disposition. That's called "Hedonic Adaptation" if anyone is interested.
Overall - though, I was quite pleased with this exercise, when you commit to doing it for a while. Nice little tool to keep for those days or weeks when you feel blue, down, or just not motivated.
Now the big question is - "Did anyone else try it for a few days?" I would love to hear from some other folk about what their experience was. Did you experiment and try any variations that might have done an even better job of keeping you in a positive mood?
One of the things about seeking Balance in your life, is to do so with a positive perspective. That's why I really enjoyed this exercise as a great start. Let me know how you did with it...
Thanks for coming back to this Charles! I did commit (to myself) that I would remember good things as they were happening so that I could later write them down. However, I didn't get to the writing down part ;-(... I know from other reading that the discipline and the writing down are key. I am sold on the concept and I'm going to start again today!!!
Let's see if I have anything better to report in a week :D
Great plan Amanda - let me know how it goes. Always more fun to work in teams :-)...
