This may cause you to reconsider how many of those cute little liquor or wine bottles you might want to consume on your next long-haul flight. George Campbell, a Senior Vice President with RIM since 2009, has been deported from Canada following following an incident of drunkenness aboard and Air Canada flight.
You may remember the story from December, 2011, where a couple of loud and overbearing executives from RIM forced a flight bound for Bejing to touch down in Vancouver. The incident is said to have cost Air Canada over $200,000.
Shortly after the event, it was reported by The Star that that the employees involved were no longer employed by RIM, now called BlackBerry. In a statement at the time, the company said that “RIM expects that its employees conduct themselves in a manner reflective of our strong principles and standards of business behavior,”
Campbell, a native of Scotland, was in Canada on a work permit while he was employed by RIM and it appears as if that work permit is not being renewed and so, Canada sent him packing (I wonder if he flew Air Canada on his final trip home).
Being drunk and disorderly on an airplane isn't such a bad thing; Hell, many renowned actors have had these types of mishaps. However, the RIM guys took it to a whole new level. After being restrained with tie-wraps, one of them ate through those only to have to be further restrained with duct tape which proves once again that duct tape can solve almost any issue.
I have some familiarity with the topic...and I have heard my share of stories about Hollywood celebs behaving badly. There are two sides to every story but overly drunken people on an aircraft at 37,000 feet are a safety hazard...as for the corporate response...it is the only response. I guess the troubles at RIM recently have been a lot more sobering...
