A little Candiana to celebrate Canada's 147th Birthday

While its not an official long weekend in Canada leading up to the 147th Canada Day on Tuesday July 1, there are a lot of people I know taking Monday off for an extended long weekend.

Fittingly, I thought I would use Canadian heritage as the topic of this week's community post.

The Confederation Train:

I remember hearing from my dad about a Centennial Train that crossed the country in 1967 so I did a little research on that. It was called the Confederation Train. It was sponsored by the Canadian federal government for to mark the 100th birthday of the Canada's confederation.  The Canadian National and Canadian Pacific railway companies both contributed to the train including a locomotive each. It was 13 cars long with 6 exhibit cars that told Canada's history from early exploration to the present day (1967).

Here's a picture of one of the interior exhibit cars, courtesy of the Niagara Railway Museum, depicting a mining scene which was, and is still, one of the key industries in the Canadian economy.

I was not able to find many other pictures of the exhibits online. Perhaps our members may have memories to share of this train or some pictures in their old albums or shoe-boxes that they can post.

Avro Arrow:

In researching Canadian content, I also did a search on our own site and found this posting by one of our members. Thanks Brian for this great story and personal account of Canadian heritage.

Have a great weekend everyone and happy Canada Day to our Canadian members!

Wow, does that bring back memories? I was seven. We went both with school and again with my parents. I remember it very well. We had a picture of the car commemorating Canada's role in the war but I can't find it now.  Maybe I'll locate it before July 1. I loved trains and since Chapleau was a railway town, we used them a lot.  Thanks for the memory!
